In order to broach out a new hand, if the boss of the old hand has been preserved, place a small slip of cork upon the end of the broach and insert it in the old hand Fig. 165.

The holes in the hands may be closed by forcing them into a conical hole in a steel plate, first turning off the metal around the edge of the hole, so that it is left rather thin, or it may be contracted after reducing the edge, by means of the stake.
